A little more about bariatric surgery
You may have already done your own research but if you are new to this, here’s a quick breakdown:
Gastric Sleeve
What can you expect?
You can expect to lose greater than 50% of your body weight from gastric sleeve surgery by the end of 5 years. However, everybody is different and success rates will depend on whether you maintain positive dietary pattern changes and regular exercise.
It can take up to 2 years to reach your target weight post-surgery. Regular dietary monitoring, exercise and blood tests will ensure you hit your weight loss goals and not risk nutrient deficiencies. Nutrient deficiencies can cause hair loss, bone weakening, fatigue and reduced immunity, all which will have an impact on your health and stop you living your best life!
The ‘gastric sleeve’ aka ‘sleeve gastrectomy’ or ‘VSG’, is the fastest-growing weight loss surgery in the world and regarded as the gold standard weight loss procedure for most patients with uncomplicated obesity.
The gastric sleeve works by reducing the existing stomach to about 80% of the original stomach, leaving a smaller banana shaped stomach for food collection. The reduction in the stomach changes the brain’s hunger drivers, which generally makes you feel less hungry after surgery.
Unfortunately this doesn’t mean any emotional struggles or mindset challenges will automatically go away after surgery. Long term weight loss success is a combination of both strong mindset and good nutrition
Omega-loop gastric bypass
What can you expect?
The omega-loop gastric bypass (also called mini gastric bypass) is a simplified version of the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. It only involves one anastomosis (connection) instead of two like during the Roux-en-Y. During the omega-loop, the stomach pouch is reduced in size and interconnected to the small intestine. This causes any food eaten to bypass the first part of the small intestine which results in earlier feelings of fullness and some malabsorption. The malabsorption means that fewer calories are absorbed leading to greater weight loss.
The omega-loop is more effective for long term weight loss than gastric sleeve surgery. You can expect to lose up to 80% of your extra body weight. However, the risk of nutrient deficiencies is higher due to the increased level of malabsorption associated with the surgery.
Committing to your new way of life will guarantee your success. This new lifestyle includes prioritising high protein foods, using mindful eating strategies, taking your bariatric multivitamins everyday, avoiding alcohol and carbonated beverages, as well as separating your fluids from meals to avoid dumping syndrome.
